Description: Ten (10) early original vintage photographs, one (1) of five proud US Military Police soldiers who were assigned to guard German Prisoners-of War being held at an internment camp in France. Britain and France held about 720,000 German prisoners mostly gained in the period just before the Armistice in 1918. The additional nine (9) photographs which came with the first photo, are scenes probably very near the location of the camp in France. The French internment camp is not identified but could have been one of the French military prison camps in Graveson (Bouches-du-Rhône), in Frigolet near Tarascon (Bouches-du-Rhône), Noirlac (Abbey) (Cher), and Ajain(Creuse). The camp was run by a joint alliance of American and French soldiers who were the guards. Additional photographs identify the American unit as the 264th P.W.E. Military Police Company which was part of the 34th Division of the National Guard. The division was established as the 34th Division of the National Guard in August 1917, consisting of units from North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota. On 25 August 1917 it was placed under the command of Maj. Gen. A. P. Blacksom, who was succeeded by Brig. Gen. F. G. Mauldin briefly on 18 September 1917 but was back in command by 10 December 1917. On 8 May 1918 Brig. Gen. F. G. Mauldin took command. The 34th Division arrived in France in October 1918 but it was too late for the division to be sent to the front, as the end of hostilities was ending, an armistice was signed the following month. Brig. Gen. John A. Johnston took command 26 October 1918, and some personnel were sent to other units to support their final operations. The 34th returned to the U.S. and was inactivated in December 1918. When the French employed German prisoners under harsh conditions in 1917, the German army retaliated by providing French prisoners with minimal rations and forcing them to labor under shellfire. Many German officials considered these reprisals necessary, and the measures eventually prompted British and French authorities to withdraw German prisoners from the front. Photographs measures 1 3/4 x 2 1/2 inches and are in excellent condition with no bends, tears, or creases and are very sharp and have strong tones with good contrast and clarity. Back are clean with no writing. Please email with any questions and please "VIEW SELLERS OTHER ITEMS". Thanks. Track Page Views With Auctiva's FREE Counter
