Description: ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT TRANSLATION (TO ENGLISH) OF ROYAL CHARTER AND RELATED LETTERS-PATENT FOR KIDDERMINSTER, WORCESTERSHIRE, ENGLAND ) Author: Kidderminster, Worcestshire, England Title: ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT TRANSLATION (TO ENGLISH) OF ROYAL CHARTER AND RELATED LETTERS-PATENT FOR KIDDERMINSTER, WORCESTERSHIRE, ENGLAND ) Publication: Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England: Handwritten Document, ca. 1636 Description: Hardcover. Folios (15 in. x 9 1/2 in.) in red paneled calf with gilt borders, chaining and corner devices. Spine reads in gilt: "Charter of Kedermestr[e]". Inner gilt dentelles. Endpapers non-pareil-style marbling, but "economically" affixed to boards in nonmatching segments. Exquisitely lettered faithful translation of original documents. Comprises about 50 manuscript pages, with about 20 lines per written page. It begins with a title page of sorts, commences in the reign of Henry VIII, moves on to Elizabeth, and then to Charles. This is followed by a three-page glossary: " In Explanation of Several Words in the Aforegoing Charter." Arguably, this translation was penned in the mid-seventeenth century, perhaps just previous to those most volatile years which encompassed the Bishops' Wars, Ulster Rebellion, and the English Civil Wars. Created in a lovely hand, and the initial capitals at the beginning of the respective reigns of Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and Charles I, which are stunningly elaborate and strikingly beautiful. Last entry quotes "the twelfth year of our reign" and the year 1637 is penciled in. Also of interest is the presence of several carot-indicated elisions, with the missing text penned-in-miniature as superscript, between the two normal-sized lines. Very Good (Document) in Good boards. Since the 16th century, the town has been known as a center for the textile manufacture. "Over the following centuries the town specialised in textile trades such as weaving, fulling, cloth working and milling, and was also home to numerous other trades including shoemaking, haberdashery, saddle making, dyers, tailors, tanners and glovers" (Wikipedia).
