Trivia information regarding Max "Lefty" Weisman In 1946, Lefty's 25th year with the Indians, owner Bill Veeck gave him his own "night" at the stadium, an honor usually reserved for players. Veeck presented Lefty with a wheelbarrow filled with 5,000 silver dollars. When he told Lefty to take the loot away, it was too heavy to budge. (Veeck had a truck behind the stands waiting to assist.)When Indians pitching legend Bob Feller was a rookie, he complained that his cap was too big. Lefty said, "Make sure it stays that way."Lefty named his son, Jed, after the Indians' "Million-Dollar Outfield" of 1931-1933. He used the first letter of the first name of each player - Joe Vosmik, Earl Averill, and Dick Porter.Growing up in Boston, his favorite player was the Red Sox' Tris Speaker. After most games at Fenway, Lefty would wait to see him as they become good friends. After Tris Speaker became the Indians' manager in 1919, Lefty saved his money for a trip to Cleveland, and Speaker arranged for him to assist the trainer, Percy Smallwood. Lefty, not a trainer, took classes in treating athletic injuries, and when Smallwood retired due to poor health, Speaker convinced team owner James Dunn to give Lefty the job."Lefty" Weisman was the Indians' trainer from 1921 until his death in 1949.
