Description: In or around 1943, Gruen - one of America's best selling watch brands at the time - started to produce a range of Pilots Watches for industry giant Pan American (Pan Am) Airlines. The country was at war and all Pan Am bases and airports were turned over to the military. With sweep seconds and an inner ring for 1-12 hour markers and an outer ring for 13-24, these watches were only supplied to Pan Am personnel. After the end of the end in 1945, the watches were eventually made available to the general public on the basis that consumers would love the idea of the 24 hour dial and those that had used them during WW2 would buy the civilian version. Very much iconic at the time, these watches are now much sought after. This case and dial of this watch has aged nicely developing an honest patina and the domed crystal is clear and unscratched The classic in-house Cal. 420SS manual winding movement found in all Pan Americans looks clean and keeps good time. Based on marking inside the caseback, the watch was serviced at least once in 1968. It's fitted with an era-appropriate vintage brown Banda lizard strap with discreet gold accents.
