French M1886 Lebel bayonet. First manufactured in 1886, the Lebel was used well into WWI. Originally the blade was 20 1/2 inches long. Many were shortened due to breakage in battle so there are many blade lengths from being retipped. During the 1930s the Lebel was " modernized" reducing the length to be more comparable to new designs and reduce weight. A few made it to WWII and some were captured by the Germans and further modified for use on German rifles. There were several French manufacturers who made Lebels and contractors who made parts of the M1886 Lebel bayonet. Some are known but many more contractors are unknown and lost to time. The blade contractors' codes found on the blade near the cross guard are all unknown. Some of them are MP, CF, C&P, GR, S.C., SG, E.F. and FC. Payment should be received within 2 days.
