Description: This is a rare collection of all twelve (12) monthly issues with their supplements of a high quality vintage Chinese magazine. The packages with these magazines were just opened after being in storage in its original packaging mailed from China to the U.S. in 1970-71. We obtained the inventory from the now closed bookstore to which it had been mailed, but until now, nobody had opened the packages with these magazines. The magazines are as fresh as the day they came from the printer and bindery. Not only is the photography exquisite, printed on thick glossy paper, but the content of the articles is of general and historic value. 1971 was an important year in modern Chinese history. The Vietnam War had spread to Laos and Cambodia, and China was promoting the fight against America's military efforts in the three Indochinese countries. That support is reflected in this collection. At the same time, in 1971, Henry Kissinger made secret trips to China to arrange for the historic trip by President Nixon to establish the U.S. diplomatic and trade relations with China, a visit which occurred in February 1972. Meantime, Lin Piao, promoted for the previous five years as Mao' second in command and successor, died in a plane crash September 13, 1971 along with his family and close supporters, reportedly trying to flee to the USSR after they were caught in a plot to assassinate Mao and seize power. Yet, he appears next to Mao on the cover of the October issue in this collection, an indication that the news of his betrayal and death probably had not yet been disseminated beyond the very highest levels of the government. Included are supplements inside some issues of the magazine. The Suplements are magazine-style and include (1.) The musical score of selections from a Cultural Revolution Opera, including two phonograph records pressed in flexible plastic of music from the opera, tucked in their own protective covers inside the supplement; (2.) A multipage Supplement covering the World Table Tennis Championship in Tokyo, March, 1971, at which China excelled, and during which Chinese players invited American players to China for exhibition matches, a visit which began April 10, 1971, thus kicking off "Ping Pong Diplomacy'" leading to President Nixon's Visit to China ten months later; (3.) A Supplement celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party. This is a valuable and important collection for academics, libraries, lovers of history, and Chinaphiles. The price of $180 is for the entire set of 1971's 12 monthly issues with Supplements included. It is NOT the price for individual issues. The volume pricing also is for full sets of 1971's 12 issues with Supplements.
