Description: VINTAGE AFRICAN DAN MAOU MASK, IVORY COAST Length: 43 in. Width: 8 in Depth: 7.5 in. Wood, Paint, Monkey Fur, Leather/Hide, Metal Visible signs of wear, handling and use. Aluminum metal enhanced slit eyes. Typical long linear avian beak. Elaborately braided fur coiffure. Wear along the outer rim where the costume/regalia has pulled against the attachment holes causing wood loss, tears, abrasion. Rubbing wear, now smooth and shiny where the forehead and nose touch the mask, and only on the carved wood peaks as it should be. Encrusted in some places and desirably uneven. Irregular patina and greyish oxidation. Overall condition and wear on the leather suggests 1960’s-Early 70’s. The Dan Maou people live in the north-western part of the Dan region. Their masks are distinguished by a long beak-like form at the chin or mouth. Masks like these served a judiciary function in denouncing spell-casters.
