Description: Vintage Japanese Laquer Writing Box Shuzenji Japan Extremely Detailed This vintage Japanese lacquer writing box is a stunning piece of handmade artistry from Shuzenji, Japan. The box is extremely detailed and showcases the rich culture of Japanese art. The intricate designs are a testament to the skill of the craftsman who made it. The box is a collectible item and would make a great addition to any collection. It is perfect for storing small items, or jewelry. It was originally made as a writing box and to hold stationary. The design on the front of the box is of Shuzenji, Japan. Shuzenji was located in an inland region of Izu Peninsula and was noted for its folklore, numerous onsen hot spring resorts, and Buddhist temple. The hot springs have been used for over fourteen centuries for their therapeutic properties. Folklore tales describe the discovery and founding of the hot springs by Kobo Daishi (774-835), a Buddhist monk who probed at the rocks in the river with his walking stick (tokko) releasing the hot spring water. There is a legend that Kobo Daishi defeated the evil spirits by mantra. The area was filled with demons and evil spirits, so in order to prevent obstruction of his training, Kobo Daishi wrote sutras while facing the sky and sealed demons in a cave called Karigome-no-Iwaya. The wall around the cave creates a unique landscape by breaking the rock into thin plates. Such a structure is called platy joints and is thought to be formed when the lava cools. The rock exposed on the cliff is a lava flow from the Darumayama volcano and is made of dense andesite. Darumayama volcano is a large terrestrial volcano that was active about 500,000 to 800,000 years ago, and together with Osezaki and Ida volcanoes located in the northwest, it constitutes the Darumayama Volcano Group. This writing box was handmade between 1900-1920. The intricate visual details in the piece are truly astounding, and pictures do not do this box justice. During the early 1900s this box was used as a writing box. It could still be used as that today or could be used for a trinket box. On the bottom right of the box it is marked Shuzenji In Japanese. It is in nice vintage condition. It does have some light age appropriate wear. The box open and closes smoothly. Please see photos for most accurate visual condition. It measures about 6 1/4" L x 4 1/4 in W x 1 1/4" H. **Shipping - Handling & Disclaimer** Shipping is through USPS.
