As a watering-place, Torquay is quite modern, and has grown enormously during the last half-century. This is due to the mild climate, which is remarkable for the little diurnal variation. The lower parts are too relaxing for many people, but on the plateau the air is fairly bracing. The older part of the town is built on the Tor, but the place has extended across the depressions round, in all directions; the once distant and secluded cove of Meadfoot being now part of Torquay. The harbour is defended by a headland and pier. The walks and scenery around are delightful, and within about a mile and a half is the celebrated Kent's Cavern, which has done so much to clear up the history of early man in Britain.
