Description: This diminutive, late 1800s-earliest 1900s lantern is a Skater's Lantern, a type made especially for carrying along on an ice skating excursion in the winter. "Back in the day" in the later 1800s, ice skating was extremely popular, especially with dating couples. (In modern times, it's been "dinner and a movie.") These small lamps -- only about 7 inches tall -- were especially helpful when used in pairs: Each person brought their own, so the couple could carry one to light the ice as they were skating, leaving the other on shore beside boots and other possessions they didn't want to take with them, with its tiny flame showing the way back.
