Description: A set of three antique, early 20th-century French santons of traditional figures. 1. The woman selling fish, or La Poissonniere. She wears a grey skirt with a pink top and a yellow apron, and holds a silver fish in one hand and a barrel on top of her head. White clay or chalk, hand-painted, some wear as shown. 4 1/2" high. 2. The farm woman, or "La Fermiere" (hand-written on the base). She wears a blue skirt and pink top with a white apron and headscarf, yellow fichu scarf, and hat, and she holds a fowl in one hand and a pot in the other. 4 3/8" high. 3. The fisherman, or "Le Pecheur" (hand-written on the base). He wears blue short culottes (bare feet for wading), a green shirt, a grey jacket, and a pink hat, and he holds a silver fish in one hand and a yellow metal fishing pole in the other. White clay or chalk, hand-painted, some wear as shown. 4 5/8" high, or 5 /4" to the top of the pole. French santons are small figurines for display in a Christmas nativity creche (in German, putz) scene, made popular during the French Revolution when Catholic churches were closed and the citoyens wanted an alternative Christmas celebration including more farm animals and villagers bringing the various gifts of their trades.
