Formed in Newcastle, England, the Animals fronted by powerful bluesy vocalist Eric Burdon debuted in America with the #1 “House of the Rising Sun.” Another British Invasion group following the Beatles, this is a second collection of songs. Volume I features chart singles in 1964 and 1965, while this album, Volume II, features hits from 1966 and early 1967. (“San Franciscan Nights,” “Monterey” and “Sky Pilot” would come later.) But this album contains not just five Top 40 hits, but some gems such as “The Other Side of this Life.” For any fan of the Animals (with Eric Burdon), both Vol I and Vol II are necessities.
