Description: The Amazing Journey of Santa Fe's RDC Cars by Ed Saalig Submitted for your perusal, the book The Amazing Journey of Santa Fe's RDC Cars. Comprehensive story of Santa Fe's Rail Diesel Car. This is the predecessor of today's DMU or Diesel Multiple Unit cars. Built by the storied Budd Company which manufactured all stainless steel passenger cars in the 'Golden Age' of railroading. This car was to solve the problem of lightly patronized trains with a self propelled vehicle, requiring no locomotives and supporting service costs. A solid idea that took hold on many different railroads. Even by the supposed end of their service life, they were de-motorized and ran many more years as ordinary passenger cars. They served in some capacities up unto the 1990's. This volume covers it's service on the Santa Fe from start to finish. One chapter focuses on the notorious accident that occurred in Los Angeles in 1956. At thirty deaths, this accident still holds the dubious record of being the deadliest train wreck in California. The events leading up to, during and after, are covered in all too much detail. FULL DISCLOSURE: Included are a few gruesome photos of human carnage. Not for the kids! This is a new soft covered copy, but not sealed. Many color and black and white photos. No one has done this particular subject any better.
