Description: Susana Martinez Aguilar was one of the early San Ildefonso potters (1876-1947) who largely made utilitarian ware. This is a black on black olla (water jug). There are two fine grey lines painted around the top opening. The upper third of the pot and the bottom half looks like there was a glossier black slip; there is an unpainted band where the pot gets narrower. This pot measures 7.5" tall. and nearly 10" wide. The opening is 5" across. There is some definite wear on this pot, but no cracks that I can see. There is some small chipping along the top rim in two spots (see pictures). The olla is signed "SUSANA' etched into the clay. I do not know enough to date this pot with precision but was likely from before 1925 given its utilitarian nature and minimal decoration. My mother was a collector of Pueblo pottery and she bought this piece at auction in 1990s.
