Description: A short letter written and signed by President Rutherford B. Hayes, politely rejecting an invitation to a wedding. One page, measuring 5.5" x 8.25", from his retirement home in Fremont, Ohio, dated January 21, 1889. Signed "Rutherford B Hayes" and addressed to Colonel and Mrs. Skiles. Writing from his estate at Spiegel Grove, Hayes states that while he and his wife are unable to attend the event, they offer the young couple "warm and heartfelt congratulations." With flattened folds, light foxing and soiling, and a bold signature. Reading in full:"Mrs. Hayes joins me in warm and heartfelt congratulations to you on the happy event of Wednesday evening and in all good wishes to the young people. We regret exceedingly that we cannot attend. Mrs. Hayes joins me in a small souvenir of the occasion to the Bride. 'For Auld Lang Syne." Hayes was an American military officer, lawyer, and politician who served as the 19th president of the United States from 1877 to 1881.
