Roman Imperial | Theodosius I |AE Centenionalis| Legionary Helmet| Desert Patina

Description: Theodosius I | AE Centenionalis Reference: RIC IX 40D Date: 378-383 CE Obverse: D N THEODOSIVS P F AVG; bust, helmeted with pearl-diadem, draped and cuirassed, right, holding spear and shield in front Reverse: GLORIA ROMANORVM: Emperor, head right, standing facing, on ship, raising right hand; Victory seated at helm. Wreath in left field. ANT in exergue Mint: Antioch Size: 23.1 mm Weight: 5.40 grams Nice desert patina contrasts the highlights of this coin. Some overzealous cleaning has exposed the underlying metal on the reverse. Theodosius is portrayed in a military role on this coin, very fitting considering his constant campaigning against the Goths, Huns, and several would be Roman usurpers. After a string of victories, Theodosius and his western counterpart Gratian ended the Gothic wars that claimed the life of his predeccessor, Valens at the Battle of Adrianople. Theodosius' reign was marked by successful management of a constant stream of military crises, but he still managed to find time to orchestrate matters of faith, becoming a critical architect of the Creed of Nicea, a statement of belief still used by the Roman Catholic church to this day.
