Museums, fine artists and publishers with exacting standards use this remarkable process to re-create their finest works of art. Continuous tone lithography (as in a photograph with no dots) evolved from collotype printing. When Black Box Collotype ultimately closed its doors in 2004, it was one of just a few printers left in the world that had mastered the collotype process. While it was a highly desirable reproduction process for the fine art world, it was a laborious, time consuming (read “expensive”) process. Since there was no screen involved, a collotype print could be 27 colors without fear of a moiré. But in the old days, on Black Box’s one-unit press, those 27 colors had to be laid down one color at a time. So the most complex jobs could take months to complete.Offset lithography is far faster and less expensive than collotype. Suddenly, four colors and halftone dot patterns were “good enough” because they were so economical. Black Box Collotype was one of the last printing houses in America, if not the world that used the collotype-continuous tone processRoger Brown (1941-1997) was a leading member of the Chicago Imagist group, who created bold canvases and sculptural objects that explore America in the postwar era. His work is personal, provocative, and political, often a commentary on current events and contemporary attitudes delivered with a strong dose of irony and a wry sense of humor. He celebrated the vernacular, mining popular culture for its truths and contradictions, and focused on a range of themes from urban isolation, alienation, and sexual intrigue to natural disasters, human tragedy, and weather patterns.James Roger Brown was born on December 10, 1941 and raised in Hamilton and Opelika, Alabama. His interest in art emerged at an early age, and his parents encouraged his talents. Growing up, he developed a deep appreciation of the material culture of the South, especially folk art and handmade, functional objects. In his adolescent and teen years, he was also influenced by the aesthetic of comic strips, theater architecture and interiors, and streamlined Art Deco and machine-age design. This limited edition poster features the iconic Navy Pier in Chicago, created by famous artist Roger Brown in 1986. The vibrant red color and unique style, combining Chicago Imagist, Pop Art, Cartoon, and Folk Art, make it a must-have for any art collector. The poster is printed on high-quality Arches watermarked paper using continuous tone lithography technique, ensuring its longevity and beauty. The poster measures 37 inches in height and 28 inches in width, making it a medium-sized piece suitable for display in any room. Although unframed, it comes in mint condition. The poster depicts architecture, Hairy Who, and the famous Navy Pier, making it a perfect addition to any collection focused on art, architecture, famous places, exhibitions, cities, and towns.
