Now, new audio technology called “DES” (Digitally Extracted Stereo) makes it possible for engineers to take a mono master and separate the instruments and vocals into individual tracks that can then be mixed into authentic-sounding stereo with true channel separation like a modern, multi-track recording. It’s a laborious and time-consuming process—akin perhaps to restoring an old master canvas that has been painted over.
