Description: Wonderful historic work from the early career of Lucius Richard O'Brien, first president of the Canadian Royal Academy of Arts. This drawing on heavy paper measures 20.5cm x 26.5 cm and features a headstone centered landscape. Lucius O'Brien signed the work and dated it Octr 28th-52 (October 28, 1852). Verso written provenance has three stages of provided information. The predominant writings state the sketch as being done by Lucius O'Brien and owned by Mrs. Percy Brown of Maplehurst, and having hung in the living room of her small hotel. Following her death, her nieces Barbara Adams and Charlotte Coats gave the work to Dorothy E. Coats prior to the July, 1948 auction of the hotel's possessions. At some point additional pencil notations were made which added the birth and death dates of Lucius Richard O'Brien and also identified Rosseau, Ontario. On close examination the added birth and death dates are a much heavier writing that etched into the paper while the Rosseau, Ontario is a softer wider writing. It is quite possible that the location was O'Brien's own notation on the sketch verso and the birth/death dates were added by Mrs. Brown, or other owners, at some point following the death of the artist. Born in 1832, O'Brien would have been only 20 years of age when he created this sketch drawing. I believe it is safe to say it is one of the earliest known pieces of his work both in the extensive museum holdings and any private hands.
