In 1705, astronomer Edmond Halley used Newton's theories of planetary motions to compute comet orbits. He found orbit similarities reported in 1531, 1607, & 1682. He said it was just one comet making return trips, correctly predicting its 1758 return. History's 1st periodic comet was named in his honor - along with Halley Lunar Crater & Halley Martian Crater. Halley's Comet is famous because it was the 1st time astronomers knew comets were repeat visitors. It was reported in observations going back 2,000+ years. It's even featured in the famous English Bayeux tapestry in 1066. It moves backward around the Sun (opposite to Earth's motion) - unusual for short-period comets. Its 1986 return was met by a worldwide fleet of research spacecraft & power telescopes. It's been orbiting for about 16,000 years, but has shown no recorded signs of aging. 'Comet P1/Halley' will survive another 45 to 65 orbits - disintegrating in 3400 to 4900 years. Since its orbit is 76 years, it means another 120 to 170 generations of people will get to enjoy it. . Normal 0 >>Halley's Comet Facts: - Reported seen in 1531, 1607, 1682, 1758, 1835, 1910, + 1986 - Will next appear in 2062 - Orbits the sun every 75-76 Earth years - Dimensions 9.3 x 5 miles; Diameter 6.8 miles - In 1910, it was captured on film for the 1st time ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ . 1. Normal 0 <>Description: Encountering Halley's Comet can be achieved in 1986 with this Solar Sail spacecraft. It's called Yankee Clipper - envisioned by NASA-JPL scientists. The sail-thin aluminized plastic would transform the sun's photon energy into usable spacecraft power. The Clipper could fly in formation with the comet for weeks, even months to study & photograph the phenomenon in depth. .
