Description: Complex history from the late 1600s when nutcrackers took the personas of kings, soldiers, church leaders and police, reducing the ruling and authoritative classes to mere crackers of nuts. This mid-century modern character, popularized by Prussian E. T. Amadeus Hoffman’s 1816 fairytale and 1892 by Tchaikovsky’s ballet, represents the monarch of one of hundreds of palaces in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) in the eastern German Republic (1949-1990). Global recognition came with the nutcracker souvenirs carried home by military personnel stationed in Germany in the 1950s. Although unbranded, the unmistakable style, conspicuous identifying features like blue eyeshadow, craftsmanship and trademark ceremonial scepter, the symbol of authority and sovereignty, are indicative of the partly government-owned Vero, Seiffen factory, that ceased operation just before 1990 unification. Because the rabbit fur is at risk, we recommend ages 12 to adults.
