Description: MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, while standing on a balcony outside his second-floor room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. News of the assassination led to major outbreaks of racial violence, resulting in more than 40 deaths nationwide and extensive property damage. King was a Christian minister who was the most prominent leader of the Civil Rights movement from 1955 until his death. Following his assassination, communities held vigils and memorials to honor the life of Dr. King. Most of the leaflets and flyers advertising these events have no survived.
