SANDFORD - AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT SIGNED 01/18/1864 CO-SIGNED BY: CIVIL WAR - UNION - HFSID 262936 CIVIL WAR: UNION CAPTAIN JOHN P. SANDFORDAs a Captain in the Invalid Corps (January 1864), he attests that a volunteer had not received advance pay.Autograph Document signed: "John P. Sandford/Capt. 12th Depot Co. I.C. [Invalid Corps], 1 page, 7¾x9¾, docketed on verso. Depot Camp, Invalid Corps, Cliffburne Barracks, D.C., 1864 January 18. "To Major Morill, Paymaster, USA." In full: "I certify that the Volunteers Description list of John Fitzpatrick gives no account that he had received one month's pay in advance, and is duly certified by E. L. Barnes, 1st Lt. U.S.I.C. & Recruiting officer." Postscript in Sandford's hand: "In Roll of Enlistment belonging to 2nd Bn. In. Corps mustered by Lt. Peabody at Depot Camp D.C." In April 1863, the US Army created an Invalid Corps, composed of veterans whose prior illness or injury precluded their service in frontline units but who could still carry out light duties. Many members of the Invalid Corps (including Captain Sandford) had been mustered out of service, but were persuaded to re-enlist for this lighter duty. Cliffburne Barracks, originally an assembly point for new recruits, was converted into a convalescent center for the Invalid Corps on August 10, 1863, commonly known as "the Depot." Later in 1864, the Invalid Corps was re-named the Volunteer Reserve Corps. John P. Sandford (1821-1881), a cabinet maker, enlisted in the 72nd New York Volunteer Infantry in June 1861. His unit fought in nearly all the key battles of the Eastern Theater. Sandford was mustered out of military service on July 30, 1863. Had his term of service expired at the end of two years, or was he seriously wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-4, 1863)? He joined the Invalid Corps (soon re-named the VRG) in December 1863, serving until June 30, 1866. Horizontal fold creases. Lightly soiled at creases and edges on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
