Description: Original John Lothrop Motley ,LLD engraving by John Sartain. Sartain (1808-1897) was an English born American artist who pioneered mezzotint engraving in the US. Consider the best engraver of his time. Engraving is over 150 years old. Made around 1860’s Motley was an American author and Diplomat under Lincoln and Grant. Know for his writings on the Netherlands. Condition: no foxing but some toning on edge see photos. looks really good with a acid free mat and black frame it would look wonderful . Size:9 1/2 by 12 actual engraving , picture without writing 4 1/2 by 5 1/2 approximately If you google John Sartain you will see many collections have this engraving. The library of Congress sells photos of this engraving. Made for Electic Magazine but note this engraving unlike others does not say made for the eclectic magazine. Just says engraved by Sartain and his name. Great piece of history. We got these while we were living in Philadelphia. Bought at an antique store and always thought we would open a store to sell prints but now retired so just selling. Have over 200 engravings. Have sat in a box for over 30 years.
