Description: This is an original linen backed photograph from ONCE A LADY, a 1931 American Pre-Code drama film directed by Guthrie McClintic and starring Ruth Chatterton, Ivor Novello and Jill Esmond. The film, produced and distributed by Paramount Pictures, is a remake of the Pola Negri silent film Three Sinners (1928). Very good condition 7.5 by 9.5 inch inch vintage original linen backed photograph. There is a light surface rub in the upper left corner, only noticeable at an angle. There is a scratch on the far right side. Ivor Novello (1893 – 1951) was a Welsh actor, dramatist, singer and composer who became one of the most popular British entertainers of the first half of the 20th century. He has numerous film credits as a screenwriter, dialogue narrator, and as an actor. He starred with Mae Marsh in The White Rose (1923), and with her in The Rat (1925), and The Triumph of the Rat (1926). In 1929 he starred in The Return of the Rat (with Isabel Jeans). He played the title role in Alfred Hitchcock's The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927). Novello was born into a musical family, and his first successes were as a songwriter. His first big hit was "Keep the Home Fires Burning" (1914), which was enormously popular during the First World War. His 1917 show, Theodore & Co, was a wartime hit. After the war, Novello contributed numbers to several successful musical comedies and was eventually commissioned to write the scores of complete shows. He wrote his musicals in the style of operetta. He is famous for Perchance to Dream, 1945 a musical romance with book, lyrics and music by Ivor Novello.
