Ireland, George I (1714-27), William Wood’s Coinage (1722-24), Halfpenny, type II, 1723, laureate head right, legend surrounding both sides, rev Hibernia seated left with harp, date in legend. William Wood - In 1722 William Wood received a patent to make coinage for the American Colonies and Ireland. His coinage was rejected by the Irish people because the King had not consulted with the Irish Parliament before it was authorized. Perceived as an insult, the coinage was spurned. Both houses of the Irish Parliament petitioned the King to withdraw it, and in 1724 Wood was forced to stop production. Provenance: From an English collection formed in the 1970s with vintage previous collector’s handwritten coin envelope branded Hull Collectors Centre Limited and stating Coin No. 597 Condition: Collectible grade with a pleasing uncleaned antique dark copper patina and surface marks from general circulation as seen.
