Description: There was a time when the American west was still uncharted and you could live a life of big adventure, when a man could be self-taught and lead a successful life. Walter Shelley Phillips (1867 – 1940) was just such a man. His childhood spent in Nebraska and years as a game hunter for the expanding railroads, allowed him to develop relationships with Plains Indians tribes, that became the basis for a long career spent re-telling and illustrating tribal stories. He was a popular Western writer, artist, lecturer, who became best known by his pen name “El Comancho”. After years of writing for magazine and newspapers Phillips began writing books of which “Indian Tales for Little Folks” was first published in 1914 by the Platt & Munk, Company. It is illustrated with “Eleven Full Page Colored Plates reproduced from water color paintings by the author and further embellished with Several Hundred Little Indian Drawings with Explanatory Key List So Little Folks Can Understand Them”. There are eleven stories that align with the full-page illustrations and the border figures are more than ornamental as there are over 320 individual notations in the rear of the book which identify and describe the significance and origin of each of the border figures. This is a 1928 edition of this period book as it should be noted that Phillips believed “every story in this book is a genuine Indian story, told in English as nearly as possible as the Indian would tell it.”
