Henry Clay - Autograph Letter Signed - Provides His Definition of Patriotism

Description: HENRY CLAY. Henry Clay (1777–1852) was a distinguished statesman, longtime member of Congress, and three-time presidential candidate who became known as the “Great Compromiser” for his central role in the brokering of hot-button, slavery-related issues prior to the Civil War. IMPORTANT AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY HENRY CLAY OFFERING HIS DEFINITION OF PATRIOTISM Important autograph letter signed by Henry, “Clay,” to members of the Whig Party offering his definition of patriotism: “Do me the favor to assure the Whigs of Dallas that I cordially sympathize with them, in their landable endeavor to disseminate and establish political trust. I need not say to them that whenever the true patriot finds himself, and whatever may be the present odds against him, he will persevere to the last in struggling for those principles and measures on which he is persuaded the character, the honor and the happiness of his Country depends.” The letter is one page, measures octavo, created in Ashland, Kentucky on October 31, 1842, and in very good condition with three holes slightly affecting the text, creasing throughout, minor toning, and having been attached to a red piece of paper with newspaper articles on the verso. “I NEED NOT SAY TO THEM THAT WHENEVER THE TRUE PATRIOT FINDS HIMSELF, AND WHATEVER MAY BE THE PRESENT ODDS AGAINST HIM, HE WILL PERSEVERE TO THE LAST IN STRUGGLING FOR THOSE PRINCIPLES AND MEASURES ON WHICH HE IS PERSUADED THE CHARACTER, THE HONOR AND THE HAPPINESS OF HIS COUNTRY DEPENDS” Two years before the 1844 presidential election, Clay began building his candidacy for president by courting fellow members of the Whig Party in the present letter. He would go on to receive the nomination, but narrowly lose the election to James K. Polk.
