Description: This George Rowney & Co. watercolor box with a beautiful trade card inside the lid was made between 1854 and 1881 when Rowney had shop locations at 52 Rathbone Place and 29 Oxford Street in London. Copying heraldry and medieval book art was a big past time for the gentry in the mid 19th century and colour men in London made artist boxes specifically for this purpose. This a beautiful old box full of the original colors in glass containers, many with of the paint still useable. The box contains 12 colors in their original containers, enamel white pigment, liquid gum, a whole Chinese ink stick, platinum powder, medieval raising composition, the original water glass, 3 quill paint brushes, bone handled pencil, bone handled erasure knife and a Rowney ceramic palette. Everything including the box is in excellent condition. The box measures 9 1/2” x 8 1/2” x 4”. There is no key for the box.
