Description: One of the very few 7th Cavalary Custer Commissions in Existance Legendary United States Army Officer and Brevet Major General GEORGE ARMSTRONG CUSTER scarce and authentic partly-printed 7th Cavalry appointment, signed “G. A. Custer." Custer, as Lieutenant Colonel of the Cavalry appoints “William Capes…Sergeant in Company M of the Seventh Regiment of Cavalry in the service of the United States", effective August 15, 1873. Boldly signed at the bottom by Custer, “G. A. Custer,” and countersigned by commanding officer W. W. Cook as 1st Lieutenant. Both Custer and Cook would later die at Little Bighorn. Capes served as 7th Cavalry Regiment Logistical Support Personnel at the Power River Supply Camp from June 22 - 30, 1876. Company M of the 7th Cavalry was part of the garrison at Fort Rice, Dakota, until they marched to Fort Lincoln on 5 May 1876 and joined the regiment to take part in the Sioux expedition. The regiment then left Fort Lincoln on 17 May, and Company M joined a scouting party led by Custer up the Little Missouri for 22 miles, returning on 30 May. Company M did participate in the Little Bighorn River fight, suffering at least 12 men killed and several wounded during battle. Capes was on detached service from 15 June 1876 at Yellowstone Depot, Montana Territory, thus he did not participate at Little Bighorn. Cook, a member of the so-called “Custer Gang,” was one of his most loyal men and remained so until the end; He was found by Custer’s side on the fields at Little Bighorn in 1876.
