Description: Fitzhugh Shrimp Dish Absolutely stunning piece in very fragile pearlware with incredibly defined handle. Unusual impressed H.H. mark. The pattern was probably produced by little known Staffordshire firm George Harrison from 1790-95 but they used a "G. Harrison mark", this is marked H.H. with similar font and print and they did produce this exact pattern so probably can be safely attributed. Form reminiscent of the chinese export shrimp dishes. C. 1790-1795. Affixed with "A True Blue Exhibit 1998" circular label, for an exhibition of British blue transfer-printed earthenware held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Friends of Blue, the Wedgwood Museum, Barlaston, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, March 21-July 12, 1998. The pattern is named for the FitzHugh family, active in the East India Company who brought back a porcelain service from China in the late 18th century. The central pattern contains a medallion that incorporates dragons regarded as lords of the heavens and the seas. The dragons surround a motif as having the appearance of an open pomegranate, a Buddhist symbol of prosperity. Surrounding the center medallion are flowers of the 4 seasons: Peony for spring, Lotus for summer, Chrysanthemum for autumn and Prunus for winter. These are combined with elements of the Four Treasures, or Accomplishments which are music, chess, calligraphy and painting. What distinguishes this pattern from most Fitzhugh patterns is the border. Instead of the Trellis Diaper border used for most Fitzhugh patterns, this plate was printed with a different border design containing geometric motifs and a modified butterfly. Approx. 8"H X 8"W.
