Description: A fine netsuke in cream white , well marked with striations and crosshatching. Very well carved with engraving signed. Well polished to a high hand finish; an element of surrealism in the wildly distorted face of the rat catcher, who yells in outraged alarm to find one of his prey on his own back. He faces a dilemma since his weapon, a studded club capable of serious injury, is useless in this situation. Signed Japanese netsuke of stylised Oni. The Oni is squatting and bearing a sword. Furthermore, the base has a red stained engraved signature. The netsuke is 3.3 cm high and weighs 20 grams. Oni An oni could be compared to what we know as an ogre, supernatural being or monster.
