Description: Princess Diana forever reigns in our hearts as the epitome of Beauty with a warm heart of pure gold, no matter how sad and tragic her young life actually was. This rare and sensitively rendered artist doll also epitomizes that melancholic aspect and ending, with such a delicately soulful portraiture. No matter in which way or at which angle her separately molded head is posed on her swan neck of her deeply décolletage molded breast and backplate, her portrait of regal grace & mystique remains evident, her beauty is unquestionable & her expression is so compelling in its prescience. She is signed by both Paul Crees and Peter Coe in gold, dated 2001 and numbered an early # 15 in a very limited edition of 300. She is approximately 28” tall, as she should be to hold her center place of focus in your doll collection. In exemplary original condition, with all original clothing, consisting of the famed Donald Campbell design periwinkle silk formal gown, crinoline, bloomers, original jewelry consisting of her elaborate Tiara encrusted with faux “diamonds”, drop faux “pearl” earrings, elaborate faux “Diamond”necklace and faux engagement ring. Her legs are perfect and in their original wrapping. She has her original wig , beautifully painted facial features, & All of her graceful fingers on her lovely regally posed hands. The condition of her porcelain head, shoulder/breast & back plate, as well as her legs, arms & beautifully molded hands has no cracks, no chips, no hairlines, no repairs & no restorations. The world famous doll artists Paul Crees & Peter Coe in their nearly three decades together produced very high quality dolls in very limited editions using first poured wax & later porcelain bisque. Prior to doll making, they worked in the theatre, where they learned costuming skills that were reflected in their creations. Paul created the poured wax perfection that gave their creations such ethereal & realistic complexions. Their dolls were celebrity art, based on famous contemporary & historical figures as well as fictional characters, including Princess Diana, Cher, Scarlett O'Hara, Cleopatra, Marlene Dietrich, Maria Callas, Greta Garbo & the Vampire LeStat from the Anne Rice novels. They were fascinated by Princess Diana's beauty & her underlying tragic aura, so chose to give her an expression of seriousness & melancholy, rather than the traditional “Diana Smile”. Their focus on reproducing her gowns in almost perfect detail using luxurious fabrics & precise tailoring made the dolls very sought after by serious collectors. When asked why they depicted Diana so often with a tiara & a sad face, even on dolls depicting non-tiara outfits & for happy occasions, Peter commented that, "It's art, dear, and anyway, that is how we saw her." They created several highly sought after wax Princess Diana dolls in very expensive very limited & very legendary editions. Their last Diana project was in collaboration with the Pink Ribbons Crusade, a breast cancer charity run by an avid Diana fan who owned half a dozen of Diana's gowns. This final project resulted in a 28" limited edition porcelain doll wearing a Donald Campbell periwinkle silk gown. The edition was limited to 300 pieces, and originally retailed for $300 USD in 2001. Please understand that $300 USD in 2001 is currently worth the spend-ability of $525.79 today, November 2024. THIS is the doll in this listing. And this doll is the early # 15 in the edition of 300! Sadly, Peter Coe passed away a few years after this doll was made, and their dolls - on either wax or porcelain, very rarely show up on the secondary market as collectors lovingly treasure them. They have always commanded very high prices. Theirs are considered the Rolls Royce of Princess Diana dolls. The edition numbers were very small, with the bisque porcelain Diana being in a larger edition of 300. The doll offered here is NUMBER 15 in this edition! RARELY does such a low number come up for sale AND rarely does a Diana doll of theirs come up without damage to the hands. She has her original box which does show wear, as the doll was mainly kept in her box, although shown on occasion. As well she has her original stand, her certificate of authenticity & also she has her original tissue paper with Crees & Coe imprinted upon it. As noted previously, she has all original clothing and all original jewelry ( Very important!)
