Description: GOOD to VERY GOOD CONDITION This sale is for a vintage hardback FIRST EDITION entitled “Half a Life,” subtitled “The Reminiscences of a Russian Gentleman,” by Count Constantine Benckendorff (1880-1959) with 9 illustrations, including a frontispiece portrait. It was published by The Richards Press Ltd., of London, and appears to be the 1954 (date of title page) FIRST EDITION. Count Constantine Benckendorff (1880-1959) was the son of Count Alexander von Benckendorff, the Russian Ambassador to the court of St James from 1903 until his death in 1917. Count Constantine Benckendorff served in the Russian Navy in the Russo-Japanese War and in the First World War. After the revolution he remained in Russia until 1924 when he settled in England. In this book of reminiscences he writes of his early life and his time in Russia before leaving for England (following the confiscation of his estate) with his wife Maria Korchinska (1895–1979) who became one of the leading 20th-century harpists in Great Britain.
