Description: An army general in the Qing dynasty, Yuan Shih-Kai earned the respect of last emperor and of the provisional president of China's emerging Republic, Sun Yat-Sen, who supported Yuan to become the first President of the Republic in 1912. Yuan, however, was unable to manage the politics of the newly-elected National Assembly, ultimately resorting to assassinating a party leader. Nevertheless, he survived the resultant revolt and made himself emperor in 1915. But rising opposition forced Yuan to renounce his new royal status in 1916, and he died three months later. The characters on the obverse side translate as "Made in Year 10 of the Republic of China."The reverse translates as "One Yuan."
