Description: CARTIER Sterling Silver Engraved Cigarette Box + Six 3" diameter Ashtrays + Six 1-11/16" long Matchbox Holders in Presentation Case. All the silver items are engraved "EF". The wood ("box" jointed at the corners) 10-1/4" x 9-1/2" x 3-5/8" presentation box is in "cosmetically challenged" condition, having many pieces of the blood red covering missing. It has a musty smell in keeping with the fact that since we inherited it in 1978, it has been in storage. The front and back hinges work perfectly and the bottom of the box has "CARTIER" in gilt print. The lining of the box top has in gilt "CARTIER" as well as the street addresses for their stores in New York, London, and Paris impressed with a banner border, as well as a couple of stains. The cedar-lined cigarette box measures 5-1/16" wide at base (5-3/16" at rolled edge of the lid) by 4-7/16" at base (4-9/16" from hinge to front of lid) by approximately 1-3/4"+ high as lid is slightly domed. The lid has several dents and does not close properly due to warping of the side of the cedar lining. The six ashtrays are engraved with "Cartier" as well as "STERLING 925/1000" on the reverse. The match holders are engraved "Cartier STERLING" and two of them have remains of wood match boxes. The set dates from the 1920s or 30s. All the pieces show normal wear in keeping with their use and age and could use a good polishing to bring out their natural brilliance.
