The next three, “In The Garden”,“Sweet Hour Of Prayer”, and “Love Divine”, arehymns which sing of spiritual joys. They are knownto everyone and are sung in nearly all seasons.“Be Still My Soul” is the stately melody fromFinlandia, by Jan Sibelius, to which several hymnsare sung. You may know it by another name. DelRoper uses it as a bridge between the simpler hymnsand the majestic “Lord’s Prayer”, which follows it.The beauty of Malotte’s “The Lord’s Prayer” de-pends, above all, on expression. Both a sensitiveartist and an instrument of great dynamic range arerequired to bring out the full beauty of “The Lord’sPrayer”. Del Roper plays it here with feeling. Start-ing with the melody played almost entirely on singlebells and without embellishments, harmonies areunobtrusively added, gradually building up to allthe grandeur great bells can give this stirringanthem. On the second side we have “Jesu, Joy Of Man’sDesiring”, from Bach’s Cantata No. 147. This is thefirst successful recording of Bach on bells, and theSymphonic Carillon has made this recording pos-sible. Harmony is the soul of Bach’s music. In anordinary carillon, a minor third is heard in each bellalong with the principal tone. Imagine playing aminor third with each and every note of any ofBach’s works! It might still be music, but it wouldcertainly not be Bach.“Fairest Lord Jesus”, also known as the “Crusad-er’s Hymn”, is sung to an old Silesian folk song. Itis found in both Catholic and Protestant Hymnals.“How Firm A Foundation” is, of course, the samemelody as “Adeste Fideles”, a Christmas hymn, andone particularly well suited for playing on bells.Martin Luther’s grand old hymn, “A Mighty For-tress”, takes on added power when played on bells, and will be found in the repertoire of many carillon-neurs. Mr. Roper plays it with the joyous vigor itdemands.“We Gather Together To Ask The Lord’s Blessing”,also called “Pilgrim’s Prayer Of Thanksgiving”, is abeautiful old Dutch melody. It is not found in allhymnals. Our final hymn is the “Doxology”, “Praise GodFrom Whom All Blessings Flow”.THE CARILLONNEURMr. Del Roper is a native of Lufkin, Texas, son ofa minister. His musical education started at an earlyage, and when he was eight years old, he playedthe organ at church services. He studied percussionunder Walter Light of the Denver Symphony Or-chestra and is an accomplished marimbist as well ascarillonneur. He has soloed at Radio City Music Halland on numerous radio and television programs. Forseveral years he has been staff carillonneur for Maas-Rowe Carillons.THE CARILLONThe Symphonic Carillon, invented by Paul Roweof the Maas-Rowe organization, differs from theusual carillon in that it has two sets of electronicbells, each set played from a separate keyboard. Inone set, each bell is tuned to include the traditionalminor third in its tone structure. This minor thirdgives bells so tuned a sweet plaintiveness, but is alsothe cause of most of the false notes heard in bellmusic. The reason for the false notes heard on caril-lons of minor-tuned bells is really quite simple tounderstand. Certain notes of any musical scale re-quire a major third, and sound false harmony if aminor third is sounded with them. For example the“do” of a major scale will not sound right with aminor third (E flat if “do” is C), but will harmonizebeautifully with a major third. To prevent these false notes, which are really falseharmonies, the bells of the second set in the Sym-phonic Carillon are each tuned to include a majorthird instead of the conventional minor third. Thecarillonneur, having at his command both types ofbells, can always select the one which fits the har-mony requirements of the music, resulting in whatis best described as a symphony of bells.THE RECORDThis record is especially designed for use on automatictower music systems which in many churches serve as asubstitute for a carillon. Tone quality and reliability ofoperation were primary considerations and playing timesecondary. Each side plays approximately fifteen minutes. The space on the rim of the record, where the needle isdropped by automatic mechanisms, is wider than on theusual record. This insures proper starting even though theturntable mechanism is not in perfect adjustment. The“universal” groove is somewhat deeper than the usualmicrogroove. It should be played with a microgroove needle, but can be played with a good standard needle. Wide groovespacing is used to prevent breakthrough and to eliminateany possibility of echo. The original tape was recorded by the most advancedhigh fidelity “binaural” system. While the true binauraleffect cannot be carried through onto the single-groovedisk, a certain life-like quality or “presence” is retainedwhich does not seem to be obtainable by any other method.CARILLON IN HIGH FIDELITYPlayed By Del Roper On 100 Bell Symphonic Carillon Thank you for your business.
