c.1925-30 Santo Domingo Pueblo Polychrome Water Olla Pottery/Pictorial/Fine Cond

Description: Shipping c.1925-30 Santo Domingo Pueblo Polychrome Water Olla Pottery/Pictorial/Fine Cond A classic early 20th century Santo Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico Polychrome Pottery Olla/water Jar with 4 birds and two flowering plants whose leaves end in rain symbols - the Olla measuring 19 cm high by 17 cm at widest point (7.5 x 6.75 in.) and in near fine condition in spite of it's century age. Fresh from an old family estate by way of inheritance and offered here for the first time anywhere There is strong evidence that this handsome early 20th century Santo Domingo Pueblo Olla was made for Pueblo use alone - as a water jar for there is evidence of water use on the bottom of the pot. Furthermore experts generally concur that the strong pictorials found on such ollas were in fact not made for the tourist trade at all but for Pueblo use alone as they contained a spiritual and sacred element not found in the common geometric decoration on Pueblo pottery made for re-sale. The indented concave base for carrying the vessel on the head, the painted black rim, and the red slipped interior of the olla neck and a charming asymmetrical stand to the olla all point to native use. There are no cracks or repairs though with some surface wear near the base. This pot was a treasured heirloom descended through the family where it was obtained in new Mexico some generations ago.
