Description: c1900 French Art Nouveau Golden Bronzed (?) Spelter Fairy Vase, Jean Garnier Click images to enlarge Description This is an architype Art Nouveau Vase produced by Jean Garnier. It is featured in the definitive book: Philippe Dahhan, Etains 1900: 200 Sculpteurs de la belle epoque (Editions de L'amateur, 2000), p. 168. The vase is about 12 inches tall, and weighs aboudt 3 1/2 pounds pounds. It appears to be made out of bronze or a bronze-based alloy--i.e. bronzed spelter--, but I am not certain. In any case, a magnet does not stick to it. This lovely decorative vase so typically art nouveau, the belle epoque, includes three different winged angels, fairies. It is signed by the well-known artist Jean Garnier. (F4877) Jean Garnier was born in 1853. His father died at the time of his birth and he was raised by an uncle. After serving an apprenticeship, he went out on his own and succeeded to exhibit at the French salons between 1883 and 1905. His work was recognized. This master of art nouveau worked in metal alloys, bronze, clay, pewter, and silver. (This information comes from the Dahhan book, p. 160.) This vase is a real beauty. It is very decorative. The golden color is unusual. We have an extensive personal collection of art nouveau and art deco which we sell on Ebay. All were purchased in France, and brought back by us over many years to the United States. Over my many trips to France, I have purchased a number of these beautiful Garnier Vases. A few years ago, they sold usually for $450 to $700. And, of course, I combine shipping when you win multiple lots so as to save you some money.
