Description: Charles Bonney founded The Bonney Vise & Tool Works was founded in 1877 in Philadelphia. In 1909 the company relocated to Allentown, PA where its production could be increased dramatically. By 1918 it was one of the primary manufacturers of drop forged tools. In 1921 the company name was changed to Bonney Forge & Tool which better identified the focus of their production. In the early 1920s Bonney introduced alloy steel hand tools which were stronger while being lighter. This certainly aided in their production of tools for the automobile industry where tappet wrenches were the most common first offering by Bonney and other companies because of the need for thin, strong wrenches. Where strength and size were less critical, Bonney continued to produce carbon steel wrenches such as this “Thin, Double Head” Check Nut Wrench. The 627 Check Nut Wrench was “Finished in black enamel, bright heads” according to entries in the Bonney Tools: Catalog C-1, 1947 and M-2, 1951 (https://archive.org/details/BonneyCatalogM21951/page/n119/mode/2up?q=check+nut). The stamped “BONNEY” (in a slight arc) and “U.S.A” (rather than "Made in U.S.A.") are consistent with being manufactured in the 1940s and early 1950s. The enamel is heavily worn and the bright heads are tarnished, but the Wrench is in fully functional condition.
