A hammer can break the bed hitch or the bed rail.Sometimes the hitch can have a accumulation of rust preventing it from seating correctly, use a tubing wire brush to clean all these connections, We use a rubber mallet (tapping lightly when needed to install bed rails. Sometimes a steel hammer is necessary but only to Remove or Uninstall the bed rail (from the bottom only never hitting cast iron on the top of the rails (we learned this early on the hard way)not the top) check out our feedback on this listing 100% +1) Many different styles of bed rails exist and different styles within those sizes (some with very subtle differences) visuals are not very effective as there were many mfgs a 100 yrs ago and rails were very similar in appearance . 2) We recommend samples to buyers when we are close to determining what type of taper pin rail is needed. ( https://ironbeddoctor.wordpress.com/pictures-with-tape-measure)(when these beds were made 100 yrs ago, there was no std, so some mfg rails were made very similar but with subtle differences which can cause a misfit or even a broken hitch if forced with steel hammer , if you purchased a bed from an antique store or flea market and received rails, they may not be the correct ones, the seller puts any rails that looks like it fits with the bed , sometimes never checking, (very common occurrence ) some of these misfits can cause a bed to lean towards the middle , or a rocking action. ( if the bed is not tight and stable you may have incorrect rails (common occurrence). we stock over 150 bed rails and can diagnose many rail issues but some have small difference so we recommend a sample in this situations, we do not sell our samples they are very valuable in diagnosing rails and continuing in the bed rail business. 3) We recommend a sample to be 100% sure the rails we are recommending are going to fit properly. We don't want you to receive bed rails that do not fit. shipping wrong rails back is expensive so samples are insurance against that 4) We don't always recommend samples; we can send the type of rails you specify.
