Description: Pereskia aculeata Variegated Cactus - 7 cuttings - VERY EASY to root. Common Names: Barbados gooseberry, Rose Cactus, Blade-apple Cactus, Lemonvine, Ora-Pro-Nobis This listing is for: 7 cuttings of Pereskia aculeata Variegated Cactus Length: 6 to 9 inches with 3 or more nodes per cutting These 7 cuttings are extremely easy-to-root. This species is perfect for both indoor or outdoor container growing. Will only flower outside, though. Flowering: they like to form flower buds here in summer/early fall. Edible Portions: Leaves are eaten in salads or cooked. Fruits and leaves can be eaten. The orange to yellow fruits have varying levels of acidity and sweetness. Try adding Stevia to them if you are going to eat the fruits...it completely changes the flavor profile and acidity level mellows a bit. This would be an interesting fruit to try after eating a Miracle Fruit Berry (Synsepalum dulcificum). Soil: Well draining potting mix or cacti mix. Tolerates a wide range of well draining soils, including peat based potting mixes with Perlite, sand, light clay with sand, calcareous soils, etc. Soil pH: Acidic to Neutral Watering: light to moderate. Municipal water is fine. Excess water from rainy months won't hurt them at all. Native Range: areas of the Neotropics, including the northern portion of South America, the Caribbean, and Central America. The plant's growth habit is viny to mat-forming, and it grows at a medium rate, making it a perfect addition to your garden or patio. Ornamental Value: Very High. It will grow up trees and spill over, adding a cascading waterfall of color to your garden. Its thorns are very minimal (almost unnoticeable), and I have no difficulty wrapping the leafy cactus around trees to get the perfect look with my bare hands. I let them grow up trellis or the base of my trees that are otherwise devoid of color. The leaves are variegated with shades of yellow, orange, peach-red, and green. Landscape/ Garden Ideas: You could have a pot of it hanging from a tree and cascading down or planted at the base and growing up it... left to cascade down various branches. Difficulty Level: Extremely Easy. This is a very chill plant and requires very little from you. They are dramatically more forgiving of excess watering than any other cactus species I know of. I have never had an overwatering issue with them. The species is edible, pet safe, and has very mild thorns. This species is perfect for xeroscaping or for anyone who loves vibrant exotic cacti and succulents but could do without the thorns.
