Before modern methods of butter making, people made and molded butter by hand into pieces for individual use or sale. Different farms would have their own designs on its butter molds. This was especially important when butter was sold at the market and not directly from the farm. They were used as early as Tudor times to decorate butter with images and words, but it was in the 19th century that they became incredibly popular, both in private kitchens and on farms to label and identify.
