Description: A 3 1/4 inch tall rectangular-shaped SMOKY burnt-honey-amber TOPAZ colored antique OWL DRUG CO bottle. This is NOT a factory made amber bottle but was blown in clear glass that contained selenium. When exposed to UV rays, the selenium turns a straw amber color. See below in GREEN for more details. This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE Blown Glass bottle with a cork-top, dating about a century old. Bottle embossed on back shoulder: "The Owl Drug Co." Then on the front of the bottle it is embossed with a picture of an owl (2-wing) perched on a druggists' mortar, stirring a pestle. The mortar is embossed with, "TODCo". TODCo = The Owl Drug Co.Condition: Bottle has content stain and age wear, otherwise, NO cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc. PLEASE see pictures for better idea of overall appearance/condition. It is an unusual light smoky/burnt topaz amber colored Owl Drug Co. bottle. It is not really amber, more a burnt amber or topaz color. The burnt AMBER color is what happens when post - 1915 glass bottles are subjected to intense sunlight or artificial UV exposure that is sometimes used to turn old bottles deep purple. This batch of glass contained Selenium Sulfate that was used as a de-colorizing agent and when subjected to sunlight, it turns a straw- yellow color. When it is exposed to intense ultra violet rays, it speeds the process up and, instead of the glass being straw yellow color, it is a much deeper burnt yellow amber color, as you see. Some say it's a good thing, others say it's bad. Some like it, others do not. If it is exposed to sunlight again for an extended period of time, the color starts to fade away.
