Description: This is a Mexican Retablo from my personal collection. Nuestra Señora del Carmen translates to "Our Lady of Mount Carmel". It is a title given to the Virgin Mary as the patroness of the Carmelite Order. The Virgin Mary is often depicted in this title holding the Christ Child and a scapular (badge) in her right hand. The scapular is the Order's emblem, and it is said that the Virgin Mary offers it to souls in purgatory as a means of salvation. The Virgin del Carmen is also the patron saint of the sea and the Spanish Navy. Her feast day is celebrated on July 16. You can find out more about her researching online. This antique Mexican retablo icon (religious folk art painted on tin), was part of a collection that my parents purchased from renowned Southwestern artist Woody Crumbo- who also was assistant director for the El Paso Texas Museum of Art 1960-1967. You can find his biography on Wikipedia. Mr. Crumbo collected these throughout Mexico and rejuvenated them which means he stabilized the paint and cleaned them, they are not restored. These retablos were hung in churches and so were easily scratched from people touching them (parents said, flicking flies off them). This has been in my collection for over 40 years. Non smoking home. I do not have an exact dating on when this was painted, but Mexican retablos were widely produced in the last quarter of the 19th century on tin, which was plentiful at the time. This piece measures 8 1/8" w x 10 1/2" h mounted on velvet covered wood which measures 10 x 12 1/2". Please view photos for all blemishes and scratches on this antique piece and decide for yourself. Expect it to be in antique condition, missing places of paint and all. The vibrancy of the paint on this one is pretty good. It is a wonderful unique piece of Mexican Catholic History and should be displayed and enjoyed. Please note: I am NOT an antique or retablo expert. Shipped UPS insured.
