Description: Antique Creamware Liverpool jug transfer-printed in black, one side depicts two lovers being discovered, and the other side shows the woman being led away. Under both are quotes that have had the letters disturbed during firing, so that they are scattered towards the base under glaze. The words are quotes from popular theatre of the period involving Harlequin and his love Columbine. * Below the spout is a third image of a fortified bridge with a mountain behind. The rim and base is outlined in brown, as is the spout. Likely made between 1790-1810. The jug measures approximately 8.5 inches high, 8.25 inches long (from spout to handle) and sits on a 5.25 inch diameter base. There are a few chips to spout with prior repair, some chips to base and a crack to base that is visible both exterior/interior. There is a crack to the side of the spout from rim and one from base towards handle. Other smaller cracks appear to be original and under glaze. * The Harlequin character came to England early in the 17th century and took center stage in the derived genre of the Harlequinade, developed in the early 18th century by the Lincoln's Fields Theatre's actor-manager John Rich, who played the role under the name of Lun. He developed the character of Harlequin into a mischievous magician who was easily able to evade Pantaloon and his servants to woo Columbine.
