Description: Antique Victorian 1860s Red Velvet Two-piece gown, definitely worn on the stage. Gold metal hand embroidery which would shine on stage. The skirt has an extremely long train and trimmed in gold bullion. The bodice has white satin along the sleeves. Fastens down the front with hook closures. Skirt fastens with a hook. Bodice is lined in linen. Skirt is lined in a black cheesecloth. Very opulent and unusual. This was deaccessioned from the Boston museum of Fine Arts at some time. Interior handwritten tag, “Gift of Miss E.D. McCormick”. Great overall antique condition. Hand repairs on white satin along sleeves. Some loss of velvet. Black silk waistband has some wear. Some black paint along skirt -- seems like it was painted on before embroidered. Amazing collector's piece. See photos.
