Description: 1.3 m tall plus base. Old, very heavy and solid teak female figure carving. The figure has been carved from a section of an approx. 200 mm diameter teak tree whose desiccated cambium appears on the outside of the legs and arms. Shrinkage over time has resulted in long but stable cracks in the outer surfaces.Good proportions, typical of this good example of the taller figures. Typical expressive female face with eyes and tribal markings.Grooved and pierced crest to top of head. Large pierced ear lobes, the left one with shrinkage crack. The shoulders have traces of kaolin or similar dressing or libation. Now with a polished patina on the hard, dense wood. The breasts are carefully defined below the arch of the chest. The backward curving torso ends with a protuberant navel just above the flare of the hips. The arms are relaxed and curve forward and inward. The legs of typical zig-zag edge form are fashioned from the outer layers of the tree. The feet are not level and I have fitted a secure steel pin to the right leg and levelling brass adjusters to the left for purpose of display. These figures serve several functions. they incarnate tutelary spirits and also reinforce the prestige of the owner, but generally are for the benefit of the household. The price is for the figure only. Carriage/delivery/collection will need to be by agreement.
