Description: All of these 22mm and 17mm French buttons are from the Napoleonic Wars and date from the late 1790's through 1815. They were all dug in France or eastern Europe. Each has a shank / eyelet and all have readable, clear regimental numbers on their faces. The # 21 button has some green bile on it so it might have been near something decaying; you can fill in the story. The regiments from top to bottom, left to right, are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 17, 19, 21, 25, 28, 29, 45, 46, 54, 55, 61, 72, 85, 93 and "Republique Francaise" depicting the bundle of branches and red French Revolution hat. These large "coat" buttons were actually worn on the tail of the uniform coatee, NOT on the breast of the blouse like I thought for many decades. The smaller "cuff" buttons were worn on the front of the blouse. Napoleonic artist Keith Rocco, the premier painter worldwide for this era of time, corrected me on all this- a very common mistake by collectors. The book is brand-new and is titled: "Prelude to Waterloo: Quatre Bras: The French Perspective". It's written by Andrew Field, one of the top writers about the Napoleonic Wars and esp. from the French point-of-view. Every single one of the regiments included in this display case actually fought at Quatre Bras; no question about it. I specifically put this collection together to highlight the fight at Quatre Bras, the battle preceding Waterloo.
