In theform of a letter to his two brothers, the fam-ous “Heiligenstadt Testament” is today arevealing study of the man as artist andcreator:Oh ye men who think or say I amhostile, stubborn or misanthropic, how greatly ye do wrong me; youdo not know the secret cause ofwhat I seem to be. Think only thatfor six years I have suffered froman incurable disease, aggravated byfoolish physicians, cheated yearafter year in the hope of improve-ment, and finally forced to face theprospect of a lasting malady . . .What humiliation when someonestood beside me and heard a flute inthe distance and I heard nothing; orsomeone heard the shepherd sing-ing and again I heard nothing; suchincidents almost drove me to theedge of dispair, until 1 was on thepoint of taking my own life. It wasart, only art, that held me back; oh,it seemed impossible to leave theworld until I had produced every-thing I felt called upon to produce, and so I prolonged this wretchedlife . . .Beethoven would live for 25 years after thatletter was written. Within ten years his deaf-ness would cause him to stop performing hisown works. Those ten years were the mostproductive of his life. For all his despair andforeboding, his sense of urgency about his artspurred the creation of his greatest works. By1812, when his deafness became prohibitive,he had completed 8 of the 9 symphonies, all ofthe piano concerti, all but 6 of the 32 pianosonatas, his only opera Fidelio and 11 of the16 string quartets. This time is often referredto as the great “middle period.” By whatevername, these ten years were surely the mostimpressive decade of any single artist’s life.Of the various bodies of Beethoven’s work, the piano sonatas are the most expressive, most intensely personal. The pianoforte wasBeethoven's instrument. His first acclaimcame from his abilities as a virtuoso pianist;later, as his deafness became more and morecomplete, the piano remained the only instru-ment upon which he could play, “hearing” thetones as his fingers traversed the keys. The “Pathetique” Sonata, Op. 13, was writ-ten in the years 1798-99. It is a relatively earlywork and, as such, provides us with a certaininsight into the more mature sonatas. Com-posed in Classical three-movement form, it isnonetheless innovative in its transcendentaluse of formal structures. This work standsapart from most of the 32 piano sonatas inthat it was written before Beethoven realizedhis encroaching deafness and in that it wastitled by the composer himself. The “Pathe-tique” foretells both tragedy and greatness. The “Appassionata” Sonata No. 23, Op. 57is unquestionably one of the great works ofpiano literature. Written between 1803 and1805 and dedicated to Count von Brunswick,it is also certainly one of the most movingpieces of music ever written. The “Appassio-nata” is in the traditional three movements. Inthe first movement, Beethoven demonstrateshis use of a rhythmic theme that is to becomeso chilling in the Fifth Symphony. Thesecond movement is an extended Theme andVariation which moves without resolutioninto the rushing torrent of the Finale. As inmany of his works, the final movement is adisplay of virtuosic technique. lp1288
